SEO consultant for London businesses
London search is won borough by borough, not city-wide. I work out which areas and search terms you can realistically win. Then I fix what is holding the site back, and build the pages and links that move those terms.
What usually needs fixing first
The most common mistake is treating London as one place. ‘SEO London’, ‘plumber London’, ‘accountant London’ look like the obvious targets. For most businesses they are the hardest terms on the list, and the least likely to bring in work. Google's local results depend heavily on how close you are. A business in Wandsworth will not show in a map pack for someone searching in Hackney. No amount of SEO changes that.
What works is mapping the areas you really serve. Then the searches in those areas that show buying intent. Then the gap between those and what you rank for now. The list looks less impressive than ‘rank for London’. It brings in far more work.
The second problem is technical. London businesses often have older sites that have been through several agencies and a redesign or two. The damage builds up. Orphaned pages. Duplicate location pages. Broken internal links. Old URLs that were never redirected. All of it caps what new content can do. So that is where I usually start.
What actually moves rankings for a London business
Fix the technical ceiling first
Crawl and index problems, slow pages, broken redirects from an old migration and duplicate location pages all cap performance. Content work on a site with these issues produces disappointing returns, which is why this comes first rather than as a later phase.
Map keywords to real service areas
One page per genuine service area, written for that area, rather than forty near-identical pages with the place name swapped. Google classifies the latter as doorway pages and it is one of the easier patterns for them to detect at scale.
Get the Business Profile working
For most London service businesses the map pack produces more enquiries than the organic results beneath it. Categories, service lists, photos, posts and a steady flow of genuine reviews do more for that than anything on the website.
Earn links that are actually local
London has an unusually rich supply of legitimate local link opportunities — borough business groups, local press, trade bodies, event sponsorship, London-focused publications. These are slower than buying links and they do not get you penalised.
What an SEO engagement includes
Technical audit and fixes
Crawl and index coverage, Core Web Vitals, redirect chains left over from old migrations, duplicate and orphaned pages. On an older London site this is normally where the largest gains are sitting.
Service-area keyword mapping
The boroughs and neighbourhoods you genuinely serve, matched to queries that carry buying intent, with one page per real area rather than a template run across a list of place names.
Google Business Profile
Categories, services, attributes, photographs, posts and a process for earning genuine reviews. For most London service businesses this drives more enquiries than the organic listings below it.
On-page and content
Titles, headings and internal links that make the site legible to Google, plus the pages that answer what London buyers compare before enquiring.
Local link building
Borough business groups, London trade bodies, local press, sponsorships and London-focused publications. Slower than buying links, and it does not put the site at risk.
Reporting you can audit
Rankings by area, organic enquiries, and what changed that month. A shared document you can open whenever you want rather than a PDF once a month.
How a London SEO engagement runs
Audit, before any money changes hands
I crawl the site, review Search Console and the Business Profile, and check what you currently rank for by area. You get the findings in writing whether or not we go further.
Agree the targets
Which areas, which queries, and what is realistically winnable in six and twelve months. This is where expectations about city-wide terms usually get adjusted.
Clear the technical ceiling
Fixes first, because content and links on a constrained site underperform. Usually four to six weeks depending on what the crawl finds.
Build the pages and the profile
Area pages written properly, on-page work across the site, and the Business Profile brought up to standard.
Earn links and keep measuring
Ongoing outreach to genuine London sources, monthly review of what moved, and adjustments to targeting as the data arrives.
A London SEO agency or an independent consultant
The honest version: this depends on how much work you need done in parallel, not on which model is better.
Working with me
- The person auditing the site is the person fixing it
- No junior executive learning on your account
- Direct access between calls, not through an account manager
- I will tell you when a target term is not worth pursuing
- You keep Search Console, Analytics and every document
- Limited capacity — I take on a small number of clients
A London SEO agency
- Separate technical, content and outreach specialists
- Can run large-scale content and link programmes at once
- Cover when an individual is unavailable
- Established relationships with publishers
- Senior people pitch; delivery is often more junior
- Higher cost, with premises and management included
If you need a hundred pages written and a link campaign running at the same time, an agency has the bench for it. If you need the technical problems found and fixed properly by someone experienced, that is a job for one person who knows what they are looking at. More about how I work ›
What SEO costs for a London business
Market context, not a price list
London SEO retainers from agencies often start at £1,200 to £2,000 a month. They rise sharply in competitive sectors. A big share of that covers account management and office rent, not hours on your account.
Independent consultants usually sit below that. The figures below are market context. Use them to check any quote, including mine. I price each job after the audit, because the honest number depends on what the crawl finds.
Before you get in touch
Sometimes, and often it is the wrong goal. Single-word city terms are the most competitive and least specific queries in any market. A plumber ranking for ‘emergency plumber Clapham’ across the eight boroughs they actually serve will take more work than ranking for ‘plumber London’ — and will earn a lot more.
It is the normal picture for consultant and specialist terms, and it is less of a problem than it appears. Keyword Planner reports in wide buckets and strips a long tail of related queries, so the figure shown understates real demand. More importantly, a term with a few hundred searches a month and clear hiring intent is worth more than one with ten thousand searches from people who will never buy. Volume matters for ecommerce; intent matters for services.
For the map pack, yes — Google ranks on a verified physical location and how close you are to the searcher, and there is no legitimate way around that. For organic results you do not; a page about your London service can rank without a London address. Anyone offering to create a London address for you is proposing something that gets profiles suspended.
One genuine page per location, each with its own address, staff, hours, photographs and area-specific content, plus a separate Business Profile for each verified site. The failure mode is generating a page per borough from a template, which reads as thin to Google and to customers.
No, and I would be cautious of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google's results, and a guarantee is normally achieved by targeting terms so specific that ranking for them proves nothing. What I will commit to is telling you honestly, before you spend anything, whether the terms you want are realistically winnable.
The method is the same; the targeting is not. This page covers how it applies in a London market specifically — borough-level mapping, local link sources and the competitive density. The underlying process is set out on the main SEO service page.
